CrossFit is all about community and mixing with like-minded people. It’s the best way to meet people and find new friends in London. A few people you know may already be thinking about going themselves, or they will after they see how much you enjoy it. So, let’s talk about the basics and how sore you’re going to be.
CrossFit: What You Need to Know
CrossFit is a hybrid endurance and strength sport that is great for anyone, from gym newbies looking for a positive, communal fitness environment that enables them to meet new people all the way to hardcore fitness fanatics looking to push their bodies to the absolute limit. Here’s the lowdown on the latest fitness craze.
CrossFit the company was officially founded in 2000. However, its creator, Greg Glassman, had planted the roots of the sport several years earlier. Having established himself as a top personal trainer, Glassman was finding it increasingly difficult to fit all of his clients into the week, which led to his ingenious idea to train clients together, adding a competitive element as well as a social one to the training sessions. Clients raved that this new method of personal training was a great way to find friends and hang out with new people while getting a good workout in and eventually Glassman expanded his communal training philosophy to introduce the trademark WOD.
What Is WOD?
WOD stands for Workout of the Day. These are pre-set training routines that have been specifically devised to be perfect for group workouts with friends. They often combine weight and resistance training with cardiovascular interval training protocols, providing a grueling, functional full body workout in half an hour or less. These workouts exemplify the communal ethos of CrossFit, which is as much about meeting new friends and feeling connected to other people as it is about getting fit and healthy.
The CrossFit Games
The CrossFit Games is an annual athletics competition dedicated to finding the ‘Fittest Man on Earth’ and ‘Fittest Woman on Earth’. These are the respective titles handed out to the male and female champions of The CrossFit Games, who battle all the way from Liftoff to Open to Regionals, before pitting themselves against the elite of CrossFit at The Games. The Games has grown exponentially in popularity since it was launched in 2007 and it has been televised and broadcast live on the internet since 2011. To put into perspective just how much the sport has grown and how huge the Games have become, the prize money for each individual champion has jumped from $500 to $2.2 million in a single decade.
